HORECA 2020

Three full days of talks, showcooking and championships

Rafel Calle

They were three hectic days for the world of hotel, restaurant and catering in Mallorca. One hundred and twenty exhibitors, thousands of visitors and hundreds of chefs involved in the fourth edition of Horeca made the Palma Velodrome a veritable hotbed of colors, aromas, flavors and textures to enjoy and experience from February 3 to 5.

Organized thanks to the conjunction of public and private sponsorship, the 2020 edition of Horeca became the showcase for all aspects related to the hotel and restaurant industry in Mallorca.

The inauguration of the event took place on February 3 and was attended, among others, by the Regional Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Mae de la Concha, the Executive Minister for Tourism and Sports of the Consell de Mallorca, Andreu Serra, from the General Director of Professional Training and Higher Artistic Education, Antoni Baos and the Deputy Director of Tourism Strategy of the Balearic Islands, Vicent Torres.

Presented by the commercial director of Horeca, José Luís Córcoles, all agreed on the fundamental aspect represented by having a leading and professionalized sector in hospitality, but also in restaurants and services.

Mae de la Concha also wanted to emphasize that it was the first time that her department had a stand at the fair, and she did not miss the opportunity to remember that the best products, the most sustainable and necessary for the field can be nourished by tourism, they have to be zero kilometer and leave the land of the Islands themselves. "The recent storm, which has left markets and supermarkets unsupplied, has to be a good example of what cannot happen again," he said.

The organization of Horeca thanked the participation of the entities that "year after year have trusted and supported this event, making it possible to place it on the national calendar of events in the sector as one of the benchmarks."

Young chefs preparing for the future

The fair was not only a place of exhibition and exchange for professionals in the sector, but also represented an opportunity for hospitality and tourism students who are trying to make a space for themselves in this industry.

700 students from Mallorca and Menorca participated in this edition demonstrating their skills as cooks, waiters and bartenders at the professional training stand. Not surprisingly, the edition was dedicated especially to entrepreneurs in the hospitality industry, who are looking for new talents and who consider that the catering sector should be one of the pillars of tourism promotion in the Balearic Islands.

Contests and showcookings to enjoy and taste

During the three days various competitions and showcooking were held in which visitors and professionals from the sector were able to witness the process of making different products. Thus, for example, several chefs faced each other to win the Bocata Gourmet in the 2nd Championship organized by Ascaib Horeca, and many others participated in the contest looking for the best cod skewer.

In the same way, it was possible to attend demonstrations of specific products such as pita bread, vegan products, ice cream as gastronomic protagonists and many others.

All this without forgetting the talks, which served to learn more about aid and subsidies and energy efficiency, among other aspects.

Horeca prepares its launch in Ibiza and Formentera

For the first time, Horeca will have its own edition for Ibiza and Formentera between March 18 and 20. From the organization of the fair, the fact that the professionals of the sector themselves are the ones who have managed to get Horeca Baleares to Ibiza has been highlighted, precisely because of the importance that the sector, both tourism and catering, has on the Island.

KOLDO ROYO SHARES HIS GOOD IMPRESSIONS ON THE FAIR

The chef and president of ASCAIB, Koldo Royo, who accompanied the authorities throughout the fair, was proud and satisfied with its history.

"In the 2020 edition, Horeca shows that every day it is gaining more ground, we, ASCAIB, have been in it from the beginning and have witnessed the changes and improvements," he explained at a time when his activity stopped, almost frantic, to pose and support other colleagues, at the stand of the Association of Cooks Based in the Balearic Islands.

For Koldo Royo, the fundamental thing about the meeting was not only that a large audience attended, but that the more than 1800 ASCAIB members did not miss the meeting. "With that we are happy," he said.

Asked about the role of ASCAIB associates in the fair, he assured that it was about giving an image to the chefs through showcookings, contests ... “chefs have more and more image, that is why they have to participate in Horeca 2020 activities Then, of course, there are other activities aimed at chefs who already have a Michelin star, or who have stood out a little more in their career ”.
